How to get to Pavia
Pavia is located in Northern Italy, Lombardy, about 35 kilometers south of Milan

By Car
Pavia is on the A7 Milano-Genova highway, 30 kilometers south of Milano Ring Road (Tangenziale). The exit for Pavia is Bereguardo/Pavia Nord. If driving through Brennero-Verona or Tarvisio/Trieste-Venezia, another option is to leave the A4 highway at Brescia, take the A21 highway (direction Torino) at leave the highway at Broni/Stradella. The most updated navigators might also suggest to use the new highways A35+A58 from Brescia to Melegnano. Both these options require driving through countryside and small villages to get to Pavia.

Connection with Airports
There is no airport in Pavia, but you can fly to any of the Milan area airports

Then you can reach Pavia by public transportation (see below) or by taxi. Taxi rides can be very expensive; you can save money by booking in advance your ride from the airports, using e.g. these companies. Mention that you will attend a conference connected with the University of Pavia during the booking procedure.
By public trasportation from Milan airports/train to Pavia
To get to Pavia with public transportation from Milan area airports, take a train or a bus to Milan and then take a train to Pavia (see below for detailed direction from each airport).
Milan main train station is called Milano Centrale, and is connected with all main Italian cities, as well as to France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Trenitalia and Italo offer high-speed train connections to many Italian cities.
Milan has a very extensive rail service, with many stations, and there are several options to connect to Pavia:

Local trains S13. Connect in Milano Bovisa, Milano Dateo, Milano Porta Vittoria, Milano Rogoredo. Travel time up to 50 minutes.
Long-distance trains (IC) to Genova and Ventimiglia, La Spezia, Livorno. Connect in Milano Centrale or Milano Rogoredo. Travel time around 30 minutes.
Regional trains (R, RE, RV) to Alessandria, Stradella, Genova. Connect in Milano Centrale, Milano Lambrate, Milano Rogoredo. Travel time around 30 minutes.
The service is operated by two companies: Trenitalia (IC) and Trenord (S,R,RE,RV). When checking timetables, make sure to specify “Pavia” as final destination (not “Certosa di Pavia”, not “Pavia Porta Garibaldi”) At the time of writing this page, a ride with S, R, RE, RV trains costs 4.00 EUR, while a ride with IC trains costs 9.00 EUR
Directions from the airports
From Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP)
Malpensa express train stops at both terminals T1 and T2 (timetables here). All Malpensa express trains stop at Milano Bovisa, where you can connect with the local S13 trains headed to Pavia. Many Malpensa express then continue to Milano Centrale, where you can find regional (R,RE,RV) and long-distance (IC) trains to Pavia.
As an alternative, several companies (terravision, autostradale, malpensashuttle) operate a bus service from terminals T1 and T2 to Milano Centrale (50 minutes travel time).
From Milano Linate Airport (LIN)
A bus service (timetables here) connects Linate to Milano Dateo (S13 to Pavia – train station is underground) and Milano Centrale (25 min travel time).
Bus n. 73 (timetables here) connects Linate to Milano Porta Vittoria (S13 trains to Pavia – train station is underground. Get off the bus at “V.le Campania” stop)
As an alternative, a direct bus service connects Linate to Pavia (timetables here)
From Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY)
Several companies (terravision, autostradale, orioshuttle) operate a bus service from Orio al Serio with Milano Centrale (50 minutes travel time).
As an alternative, a local bus service connects Orio al Serio with Bergamo train station (info here), from which you can get RV trains to Milan and then to Pavia (connect either at Milano Lambrate or Milano Centrale).
