Special Session on:
Numerical Methods for Fluid Mechanics

Effective and accurate solution of fluid mechanics problem is an essential step in the numerical simulation of many real problems.

Examples are provided by flows in pipelines where the fluid (usually a mixture of air-water-gas) exhibits a complex physical behaviour, or by interface or turbulent or multiphase flows encountered in complex physical configurations, from aeroacoustics to biofluid mechanics, to multiphase or multiphysics problems.

Ad hoc numerical tools are in general requested for tackling these problems, with an appropriate balancing of accuracy and efficiency, especially in the simulation of realistic 3D unsteady flows.

Furthermore some situations demand for specific tools not always available in most of the current commercial codes. This is the case, for instance, when one is interested in controlling specific quantities (such as the lift and drag of an airfoil), or in the simulation of a 3D compressible mixing layer in a complex geometry where different temporal and physical scales need to be captured.

Aim of this minisymposium is to provide an assay of some of the more advanced numerical techniques proposed recently in the computational fluid dynamics.
