Special Session on:
Advanced Numerical Methods

The objective of water resources simulations is to evaluate our understanding of complex flow and transport processes in order to estimate our capability of predicting the fate of contaminants and/or optimizing the management of this resource. The common mathematical models are based on balance equations and constitutive laws like Darcy's, Fourrier's or Fick's laws which lead to partial differential equations of elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic types. It is now well known that standard approaches like finite volume or finite elements may have difficulties in handling sharp fronts, anisotropic diffusion type tensors and/or high discontinuities in parameters. Therefore, many alternative numerical methods have been developed in the past 10-20 years to improve the robustness and accuracy of the numerical solutions.

For this session, we are seeking contributions that address these alternative advanced numerical approaches including but not restricted to such topics as high-resolution methods of eulerian, eulerian-lagrangian or lagrangian type, multi-scale methods, adaptive mesh refinement, and improved solvers.
